Sounds Destructive - Time of Life

Judgereview:
Surely on the commercial side of drum n bass but nevertheless succeeds in bringing us some banging beats and some well-arranged synthlines. Kicks off with a Spanish style guitar before the male vocal starts with an angelic voicehook. When the pumping drum n bass beats starts it almost comes as a surprise – since the beginning really sounds more like a dance/house tune! But after the beats starts the track rocks to the end!

The Beat is a steady and pumpin drum n bass beat which a perfect matching sound for the rock type arrangement. Would have been cool with a little more variety to the beat but looking at the song as a whole I agree that a too sophisticated beat would not be appropriate!
The Structure and melody is awesome – the acoustic guitar groove sounds great with the vocals and synthbass. Everything is in perfect balance and the synthlines takes over perfectly when the vocals are not there! The oldskool synthline at 01:30 makes up a perfect theme for the song which otherwise might have lacked a catchy element!
The mixing and arrangement shows superb professionalism – these guys really knows what they are doing! The vocoder effect on the vocal remains controlled and is not overused – which was a major irritation on dance tracks a few years back.
Overall this track has all the qualities to become a hit record. The catchy theme and vocal – the banging beats and cool structure and sound! I am surprised that you guys are not already signed since you got such a good product already! Many electronic producers are lacking the vocal elements that you guys already have under control. With the break scene opening up I see a promising future for Sounds Destructive for sure!

override & polyphonix - undertone

Judgereview:
State-of-the-art Canadian drum n bass tune with a great vocal hook and some superb 303 acidsynth! Full power on the beat but the track remains very melodious and full of cool music elements. Extremely well-produced and well-arranged this tune keeps you entertained from start to end. When the 303 acid kicks in with the vocal it really blew me away – “wow this is what Im talking about!” The tune kept on impressing me over and over!

The Beats are created from scratch with a very nice result. Doesn’t quite work as well as a chopped break but it’s without doubt the best “manual beat” I have ever heard! Its awesome how the second snare has extra power which really makes up a really cool progressive beat!
The Structure and melody shows amazing skills and is surely drum n bass at its best. The 303 synth is beyond compare the coolest thing to be pulled of in the contest this year! The other synthlines are in perfect harmony with the 303 and the rolling bassline!
The mixing has no flaws what so ever – everything is perfectly arranged. The vocal reverb sound is awesome and really gives the song a catchy element to hang on to. The synth buildup at 01:29 is one of my favorite parts of this song!
Overall this is a top-end tune with so many great features that it leaves most other contesters far behind! The energy of the song is outstanding and all elements are in perfect sync. What can I say…this is hot tune…hope to hear much more from you guys in the future!

Wicked Sneek - Break My Mind

Judgereview:
An extremely professional and aggressive drum n bass tune with an cool progressive beat and some fantastic smooth synthlines! Break my Mind doesn’t waste too much time on a build up it starts out with a crisp acidsynth and pumping drum n bass break! The synthlines advances as the song progresses and even shows some sweet harmonies mixed with the rough acid and bass!

The Beat is perfect – nice and steady break with some cool cuts at the end of each section which provides a nice variety. Well balanced use of snare which always seems to hit just right every time! I might have enjoyed a softer “teasing” kinda beat in the melody section to build up for the next beatsection – but its not critical at all!
The Structure and melody in this songs is without the best I have heard in the contest this year. Really great theme that gives you that “wow I wanna hear this track again” kinda feeling. I am really impressed of how well each of the many layers of synth works so well togther without ever sounding messy! I really love the sweet melodyline that starts at 02:12 which really takes the track to the next level.
The mixing is phenomenal like the rest of the track – all the elements of this song is in great balance. Even if its over 7 mins long it keeps changing and always keeps the listener interested.
Overall this is a state-of-the-art drum n bass track which shows great skills and professionalism from the Wicked Sneek! Its one of those tunes that grows on you to where the more you hear it the more you love it. One key element I am really missing in this song though are vocals – a tender female vocal line would have really been perfect for this song. The song is awesome the way it is but with a vocal this track would be beyond compare! Great job man!

LSD - Sunrays

Judgereview:
Straight in-your-face drum n bass with a great main vocalhook and some kickass beats. The tune starts out a little slow but when the main beat kicks in at 01:18 we all know what time it is! The humming female vocal really carries the tune all the way though – along with a banging bassline and some trippy stings and other cool elements.

The Beats are superb and really energetic – and is one of the strongest parts of this tune. The first beats seems a little weak but once the bass come in the beats moves at full speed all the way to the end. It sounds great how the bass is taken of the beats at 04:45 and it slowly slips away as the song ends.
The Structure and melody is build around a heavy synth bassline and trippy stingline . The stingline gives an awesome mellow atmosphere that fits great with the vocals and the beats. The bassline seems a little simple since it never changes key – but it sounds cool when its filtered up into an acid sound!
The mixing/originality it great – lots of cool details and a nice flow though-out the track. Its great how the vocal is playing a central role in the track and the rest revolves around this. A nice detail is how the vocals is chopped up and echoed out each time is plays.
Overall this is without doubt one of my favorite tracks in this year contest. It’s a perfectly balanced mixture of underground drum n bass with a twist of mainstream brought by the vocalhook. Minor adjustments is needed for this song to be absolutely perfect – very well done!

Toster - Playin' Wit' Fire

Judgereview:
Fresh drum n bass track from a guy who obviously knows what he is doing. The production is flawless and it almost seems like runtime for Toster to delivery this piece! Nice and energetic this track moves along at full speed after the cool intro has ended and for the remainder of the song!

The Beat is programmed from scratch with quite a decent result. It shows great skills but it doesn’t quite reach the level a chopped up break would give. So the beat is probably the weakest part of the song I must say..
The Structure and melody is superb – with perfect balance between the bassline and synthlines. Awesome atmospheric elements in the intro with a great mixing of dark vox.
The mixing leaves us with nothing to add with the perfect flow from the atmospheric intro to the progressive bassdriven last part of the tune. An effective pause is found at 02:16 where the trippy synthline runs before kicking off the next mindblowing set of hightempo beats.
Overall this is without doubt a high end track with out a few missing elements. A more catchy theme or something to make you wanna hear the song over and over would have been nice. A break based beat with some cool cuts would also have made the overall impression of this song better. Nothing more to say than – great job man – hope to hear more stuff from you in the future!

Cyberworm - Deep Impulse

Judgereview:
Pretty trippy and dark drum n bass tune with some really sophisticated beats. Starts out with an atmospheric intro with a cool trippy vox effect. Almost though this tune was in the wrong category as the slow beat kicked in. But the beat quickly builds up and becomes a more traditional drum n bass beat. Its really interesting to hear how the beats develops from a really simple beat into a mindblowing inferno of rhythms.

The Beats are really awesome and its also whats driving this track. The beat come in many different shapes and forms throughout the track – but I must say I find the halftempo parts the most interesting. Its really cool how the beat morphs from full to half tempo and back at 03:34.
The Structure and melody is very limited – and its not really important due to the dominating beats. There are some pretty cool effects and vox in here but overall this track is not very melodious.
The mixing is quite advanced – especially on the beats! Its really hard to foresee whats gonna happened next which is a really cool thing. The track may seem a little unstructured for this same reason – but if you like sophisticated beats like I do this is pretty cool.
Overall an interesting tune with some nice ideas. Its does lack some fundamental elements to become a high-end tune this contest – like some kind of theme or melody. Its mostly beats and effect – which actually isn’t bad when the beats are as cool as these!

Intruder - Mind Rider

Judgereview:
Progressive dark drum n bass track with a heavy bassline and some pumping dnb beats. Mind Rider is a real dancefloor pumper and shouldn’t have much of a chance leaving anyone standing still on the floor. The song is driven by its deep bassline and pumping beats and doesn’t have too much to offer on the synth-side.

The Beat is really energetic and keeps the song moving from the first minute to the last. The loud snare is the coolest part of the beat – but a little more variety to the beat wouldn’t have harmed. .
The Structure and melody is kinda limited to some really dark synth bleeps which never really get to become a melody. To make this a true dancefloor blaster some better synth would have been required!
The mixing/originality it excellent – Intruder really knows how to build up a danceable track. The small pauses before kicking of the beats again is great and break in the middle for people can catch their breath is gold! Even if the melody doesn’t have much to offer just the great build up makes this a great tune! A great detail is also how the beats filters down at 01:20 before spinning up top ride again!
Overall this is a top end production which pretty much shows a school-example on how to build up a dancefloor oriented track. The melody and the beats could be improved but other than that this is a great track! Nice work!

ics - it's time

Judgereview:
Pretty cool tune – awesome concept with the martin luther king voice – really brings an extra dimension to this dark drum n bass tune. Added with a simple bassline and trippy beat and some trippy synth this track works well. Its nice for once to hear a short simple song that doesn’t go on for 10 mins without any changes. Strictly business all the way though!

The Beat is not an ordinary drum n bass beat – its programmed from scratch but is still pretty banging! The distorted drum adds some extra spice to an otherwise pretty simple beat. Could have liked a little more variety to the beats – maybe an different beats in the silent sections.
The Structure and melody is starting out with a mellow pianoline and followed up with a simple bassline and later on a filtered synth. It all sounds well together but it doesn’t quite reach the potential of the awesome mellow pianoline. The bassline seems a little too simple – but nevertheless it does the trick!
The mixing/originality is cool – I love how this track is really using stereo to its fullest. The hi-hats pops in each speaker and snares also switches from side to side. Big ups for that! Again the beat is original but the rest of the tune is pretty ordinary.
Overall this is great tune with some really great ideas. The mellow pianoline mixed with the luther vocals is great – but some weaker elements such as the bassline is pulling down the overall impression. But this is surely a high-end tune…nice work!

Blister Unknown - The Visitor

Judgereview:
Dark vibes with lots of atmosphere and a nice main synthline. A groovy classic break kicks in and freshens up the track at 1:40. After a short pause a new almost rock-sound kinda beats kicks in and adds even move crisp to the song. The 2 beats is blended together nicely for the remaining of the track – as more dark synth and vox are introduced.

The Beats on this track is really off the hook and it probably the strongest side of this song. The blend of steady breaks and cutting and chopping is at perfect levels on this song. I love how the different breaks are switched without the listener really noticing it – even if they are so different. Really well done!
The Structure and melody has a lot to offer as well. A little on the dark side for my taste – but its well done and it keeps the song going – all 7 mins. of it! The coolest part is at 04:30 where the synth goes acid which sounds great with the rock-style drums.
The mixing/originality is lacking nothing – the song keeps changing which keeps the listener hooked at all times. The intro may seem a little long – but the rest is great!
Overall The visitor is a great production with lots of cool elements. The beats are really well done and synth and bass seems to work well with it. The vox samples sounds great – but they do seems a little random and there is no overall meaning with them. The songs is lacking something a little more catchy – something that makes you wanna listen to it again. When this is said I must conclude that this song is at the top end of this category – well done!

dj_padman - Impossible Surface

Judgereview:
Nice and twisted experimental drum n bass tune from down under! The review is is little late but hopefully better late than never :) The tune is surely well worth a review!
The beat is twisted but yet still stabel in true squarpusher style. The small vox hits in the beat is also a cool squarepusher twist thats done nicely in this tune. Unfortunantly the beat isnt bringing the variety that you could expect in an experimental beat like this. Some more cuts and different snaredrums would have made it even cooler!
The melody and structure of the track is kinda mellow and dark ambient inspired synth. Gives a very twisted vibe to the whole thing. Could have used some elements that were a little more catchy to make the song more accessable.
The mixing and originality is awesome. The twist vox effects and the whole squarepusher arrangement is really cool. The mixture of fast drum n bass and ambrient also makes up quite an original cocktail!
Overall a cool experimantal production that could have benefited from some more catchy elements. Still very well done!

michele vincenzo fusco - plasma ray

Judgereview:
After deliverying kickass drum n bass tunes in the last few contest including the winning tune of last years dnb category – michaele vincenzo fusco brings us something completely different this time. This really states the fact that we are dealing with a skilled artist who can do more then one thing. This experimental track kicks us into an amazing epic of trippy sounds and laidback grooves.

The Beats are nice and steady which fits this tune well. The tune is kinda laidback so too much slaming beats would work. I love when the beats gets totally distorted before a new section starts – that’s really effective.
The Structure and melody is based on a huge ambient journey though sounds. The synth bells are great and the whole thing matches perfectly. I know this is meant to be a trippy experimental tune – but I am kinda missing some thought of theme melody in the whole thing. It really gets heavy after the first 5 mins I think.
The mixing/originality is outstanding – nothing to add here. All element are in perfect harmony From the synth to the background noise to the deep vox – good job!.
Overall this is cool song and it has so many cool elements and details. But this is not contest winning material – its way to deep and serious but still I enjoyed it. Surely another great tune to be proud of!

aeczem - Bad Dreams

Judgereview:
A nice atmospheric drum n bass tune with a trippy flow. Starts out with some chillout stings and drops in a deeeeeep ass bass accompanied with classic drumloop. The build-up is pretty well done and things are faded down quietly before staring the next section which makes this a cool tune to chill out to.

The Beats are straight classic drum n bass breaks which are crossfaded together with a lowpass filter. Not to many surprises to be found here – but I guess this is suiting for a chill out production.
The Structure and melody is a little limited – the mellow stings are mixed with a bass that seems are little out of tune. The chords doesn’t seem to match each other which is quite a pity since these are the only 2 music elements in this song. I am missing something else – like a gentle piano groove or maybe a mellow trumpet would have been nice.
The mixing/originality is really well done – no flaws in this area. I love the chillout style and the way it is quietly mixed together.
Overall this is great track but it does quite reach the heights that it could have. With some more music elements and some more variety to it this song could have been perfect. Hope to hear more of this stuff from you in the future!

spill - prototype 9

Judgereview:
Huge sound – great atmosphere and superb sound quality. This is quite a production with a lot of different elements strangely melting together in this unique track. The electro and ambient elements manages to go well together with some steady breaks which really gives this track an interesting flavor.

The Beats are pretty cool and really helps this tune not getting to heavy and serious. The drum n bass beat with the flanger that kicks in around 04:00 is probably the one that works best with the twisted background elements. However the beat at 05:40 makes a good funky vibe as a contrast to the electro vibes
The Structure and melody is very hard to figure out – it almost takes 5 mins before you can hear some kind of melody. The synthline is awesome though and you only wish there would have been more of it.
The mixing/originality is without doubt a noticeable part of this song. The atmospheric buildup and the technical use of beats and synth really makes this tune interesting to listen to.
Overall a very well-produced tune that shows awesome skills – but as the name of the song implies this sounds more like an experiment than an actual tune. The different elements of this songs is amazingly well mixed together but there is no flow or consistency in this song. It sounds like 3 individual songs put together as one – which in a way is kinda cool. There is way too much building up in this songs – and it never really kicks off. The synth and funky beat part in the end is the closest we get – but it needs a little extra to really move. But overall very good tune!

xzm - Male Leech(vip)

Judgereview:
Pretty twisted dark drum n bass tune with a trippy synth noise going though the first 2 min of the song – which is the part of the song I would have preferred to be without. But once the main beat kicks in with a groovy progressive bassline the track actually gets pretty slamming!

The Beat is the classic amen break with pretty ordinary drum n bass arrangement. Spins up in a higher pitch at the end of each section which is pretty cool. But there seems to be a split second too much silence between this part and the next section of beats which is quite a shame. I guess it no biggie – but when you mess at lot with beats you tend to become too aware when stuff don’t loop probably. Other than this the beats are pretty well done – don’t bring anything new to the genre but who’s says it has to?
The Structure and melody is initially based on a really annoying high synth tone – which sounds like when you have heard way too much loud music in your headphones. But once the bassline kicks in the songs is back on track! It has some pretty nice oriental style sounds in it as well. A few more elements on top of whats already there would have been nice!
The mixing/originality is pretty decent – it doesn’t bring much new – but whats here is well-produced and well-arranged. It should have stayed with just the middle section with the bassline and the amen and build more on top of that.
Overall not a bad tune – left my ears hurting a little bit but it surely entertained me all the way though. With a little more variety and some extra elements this would have been a top-end tune!

NuD.E. - Afterlife

Judgereview:
A rough production with an offbeat rhythm and a cool funk bassline. Uptempo drum n bass with nice funky flavor to it. The synth and bassline is build up on a classic set of chord which I never tend to get tired off. Another cool thing is that the bassline actually builds up with more and more distortion as the song progresses.

The Beats could have been better – but the offbeat snare is actually quite interesting. The half tempo sections also gives a nice variation to the fast drum n bass beat. The beats sounds a little too programmed for me and it almost annoys me the offbeat pieces – but I guess that’s just me!
The Structure and melody is based on a simple but good bassline. Spiced up with high bass that sounds like a bass. Unfortunately these are the only 2 melody elements in this song – some more different element would have made the song so much better. These chords gives endless possibilities so this seems a little too easy!
The mixing/originality is all-round in the good end. The build up distortion on the synthbass is a nice feature that really provides quality to this tune. Other than this the songs has a pretty ordinary structure!
Overall this is a good track with a nice bassline – but is lacking some more musical elements. The beats is not bad but not fantastic either – which is a pity since it could have lifted this track above average.

The Wraith - Dead By Morning

Judgereview:
Straight in-your-face dark drum n bass tune with a slamming amen break and heavy distorted bassline. Well-produced but it seems to be repeating it self too much so a length of 3 – 4 mins would probably have been more suiting.

The Beat is based on the classic amen break with the typical drum n bass treatment. Nothing very inspiring about this – but the second beat that starts at 4:01 does add a nice variety to the beat.
The Structure and melody is build up on a heavy distorted bassline that is filtered up and down thoughout the song. The oldskool hardcore synthlines together with the double percussion strikes in the beginning is pretty cool.
The mixing is well done and is without the stongest part of this track. The intro seems a little long but the rest of the songs is working well.
Overall this is a average drum n bass tune that to me is too stereotypical drum n bass. Its a little too dark and heavy and it could have used some vox or some other melody elements to freshen it up. Its well-produced stuff so I hope to hear some more from The Wraith in the future.

sam - PARRALAX

Judgereview:
A last minute drum n bass entry (12 hours before deadline) that doesn’t quite give me the chance to get familiar with. A lot of the other songs I have been listening too for a while to see which tunes catches my attention and works on me – and which does. So all I can do with this tune is to give my initial opinion!

The Beats are pretty ordinary drum n bass beats with wide variety of snaredrums. Starts out with a real classic jungle break and develops into a rougher nu skool drum n bass beat. Some pretty cool effects on the beats are to be found in the last part of the track as the song ends!
The Structure and melody is mostly dark and atmospheric sounds and synthlines. A cool heavy driven bassline kicks in with the drum n bass beat at 01:04 and follows the track to the end! Some more vox and more catchy synthlines would have been a great on this tunes!
The mixing/originality is really average and there are no flaw to be found anywhere in the mix! Its cool how the beat filters down in the end of each section!
Overall a mediocre drum n bass entry in this contest – but it does show good production skills so I sure there are more smashing drum n bass track to come from this source!

MC$LP - Keep Da Bass BUMPIN Loud

Judgereview:
Hardcore drum n bass tune with lots of distortion and high speed breaks. Driven by a deep bass and some rather simple synthlines this tracks kicks at full speed from start to end. The track got some pretty cool pauses with some stand-alone vox which is some of the best elements of this song.

The Beats are build up around a pretty groovy break with some extra snares on top. The break sections where the beats runs alone is pretty cool – for example at 00:59.
The Structure and melody that are featuring in this song are some simple synthlines and some acid bass elements. The beat effect is probably the the vox that repeates and builds up for the next section. But there is not really much melody to be found in this song!
The mixing in connection with the arrangement of the song is okay but the sound output is way to loud – to the point where it actually distorts. This I most significant in the early part of the song where the deep bass runs with the beats. The ending of the songs brings some quite cool scratchlines and some nice effects on the acid bass
Overall an average drum n bass tune with a nice break and some good ideas. The overall impression kind of gets a notch down due to the distorted output. But for sure a decent result considering just 4 years of experience!

the DarkSouls - Walls of Jericho

Judgereview:
Hardcore experimental drum n bass with heavy distorted beat and deep synthbass. Some cool oldskool synth melodies is running side by side with the twisted beats. The track starts out pretty crazy with some heavy noisy offbeat element but transforms into a pretty cool after the first minute. The song seems a little unfinished since its only 02:44 of length but its actually quite amazing how much is actually happening in that short time!

The Beats are full of action – changes 2 or 3 times during this short tune. Starts out with an experimental offbeat thing that Im not too crazy about. Turns into a more ordinary drum n bass beats that’s driven by a loud snare. The best part I think is the human beatbox at 01:15 but only for a few seconds. I wish there would have been more of that.
The Structure and melody is quite hectic – lots of bass and different synthlines. The oldskool synthlines sounds like something out of the first Prodigy album which is pretty cool. If it can work today I doubt – but its still enjoyable to listen to!
The mixing is so unstructured that its hard to say anything about it. There are some cool cuts to be found and there are some not too successful passages in here as well. The ending for one seems very sudden which is quite a shame – cuz it kinda end right when the song is getting cool!
Overall a crazy tune full of action – and it could have easily have been 4 – 5 mins long with all the stuff that’s going on! Should lots of cool ideas so I think there are much more music to come out from this Dark Soul!

bLk - desert pleasures

Judgereview:
Pretty groovy tune – nice oriental vibes and a good main synth hook. An overall good production – but I think its in the wrong category. Its not drum n bass and its not really experimental – its more like an oldskool electro tune with some fresh synth to it. But don’t get me wrong – this doesn’t make it a bad tune – only a little hard to compare with the rest.

The Beat is without doubt the weakest part of this song. A good progressive beat could really have lifted this track way above average – but instead it sounds a little too minimalistic and its lacking surprises. This is something you can work on since it seems you got pretty much everything else on the production-side under control.
The Structure and melody is really strong on this track – and its got a good theme that makes the tune worth listening to more than once. The synth work is awesome – the oriental style melody sounds great in the mix!
The mixing/originality is lacking nothing – its well-produced and everything is in good harmony. The synth has a great sound that matches well with the oriental theme of this song
Overall Desert Pleasure is solid production with a consistent theme which makes it a nice tune to listen to. However the beat is not living up to the quality of the rest of the tune. Its unique style also makes this a hard tune to judge but overall a good tune!

firewall - krak edd

Judgereview:
“Krak edd” is a funny little tunie – with a steady synthbass and a progressive electro break. I’m not sure it has landed in the correct category but never the less it’s a tune that grows on you. It sounds like some sort of test of a synth – where different programs are test in “real-time” as the song progresses. All the different sounds and forms that this synth bassline is taken is almost making up for the lack of variety in this song!

The Beats are pretty straight electro breaks with a nice and crisp snare that really helps this tune rocking on. Not much to comment on it – sounds great – but a little more variety and maybe some build up on the beats would have been nice
The Structure and melody is based on one simple synth bassline that are played in large variety of different shapes and sounds. It would have been a nice with some more elements to go with this great synthline.
The mixing/originality sounds like real-time mixing which makes it a lot more difficult – for timing and precisions. If I’m right about this I think the result is pretty good – the synth switches at the right moments and the beats are working will with the synth.
Overall a cool little electro breaker with catchy synthline that really grows on you as you listen more to the tune. But at the end of the day – this is a little too simple and is lacking details and surprises.

acqzuel - iwdg

Judgereview:
Twisted experimental pieces with great beats and lots of energy. The song is too short to be consider a finished song – which is really a pitty. However what is here is pretty good! Starts out with a downtempo beat – which is accompanied with a double tempo break with a cool little synth punch in the end. This is a really cool detail that really adds to the quality of this song.

The Beats is whats driving this song – the variety of the beat is awesome and you can never really figure it out before the song is over – which is a cool thing!
The Structure and melody - well - this is mostly beats so there is not much to say about this. A simple synthbass can be found in the beginning but this is not important once the high speed beat kicks in. A synth theme or some sort of melody would have made this song a lot better – and might have helped it become a more complete track!
The mixing/originality is very interesting! Its cool how the beats runs at half speed and then full speed and how the synth as a rhythm more than a melody.
Overall a cool tune with a lot of good ideas. Like I said before – its only a shame that it isn’t more than 2 mins long. With twice the length and with more melody this would have been a strong

DISCORD - FLOW

Judgereview:
Im not sure this is really drum n bass – except for the fact that the all time most used break from the amen track is used. But the way its used sounds more like bigbeat or maybe somewhere in between – whos to say…the good old discussion of genres. Not all music fits into those boxes of the genres we have set up! Anyways…about the track – is a progressive break driven tune with a gentle bassline and some synth stabs.

The Beat is amen – which is probably the 7th tune in this contest that uses it. However this is done differently – more loopbased and slower which is actually kinda cool. Amen is great and you can never go wrong with it and this is an great example of it. The beat is driving this track so it’s a good thing it works as well as it does!
The Structure and melody is limited to a simple bassline and some industrial noises. A better theme of some other melody element would have helped this tune a lot.
The mixing is not bad – but pretty straight forward. A cool detail though is when the break filters down at 01:29.
Overall this is an average tune with coolest asset is the fact that it hard to categorize. Its got a nice beat but since this is the only thing this track has offer this tune cannot reach the top in this contest. You should give bigbeat or funkybreaks a try since this is how you produce and build up tunes. Look forward to hear more from you in the future…

Bass Cannibal - Room of evil dreams

Judgereview:
Trippy and atmospheric drum n bass tune! Kicks off with a nice atmospheric intro before launching a straight-in your face amen-style breakdown. The whole thing is spiced up with a distorted bass sound that and some vox that follows the beat.

The Beats are kinda uniquely arranged. The stop repeat treatment that this amen break has been undergoing seems a little out of order. Its doesn’t quite flow as well as it could have. This could have been a cool basic beat to go with some other breaks on top – but in its raw form it kinda makes the tune sound a little awkward. When this is said I do enjoy the fact that this is not just another regular drum n bass amen beat!
The Structure and melody is pretty much not existing – it all beats and some bass that pretty much works with the beats. So there is not much to say about this! The dark vox though is a really cool addon to a otherwise pretty empty tune!
The mixing/originality is quite okay – the beat is well arranged but doesn’t quite work for me – but it might just be me whos picky!
Overall an interesting dark drum n bass tune. It really has nothing else to offer but the beats so it quite a shame that this does function to well. I would probably categories this tune as experimental rather than drum n bass – this way I could value the originality of the tune rather than trying to fit it into the drum n bass style!

LIL SWISS - Make Some Noise

Judgereview:
Not bad at all – lots of action – heavy bass - breaks and voice cuts. Starts off with a deep distorted bassline – kicks in the classic amen break and some just as classic voice hooks – “Make some noise” – “Mars Needs women”. Lil Swiss knows what its about – but may lack a little bit of experience to make the whole thing work. The production is a little rough in places but taken the experience in consideration this is a pretty good tune!

The Beats are really not working that well – its way to simple and lacks surprises. The amen break has been used soooooo many times so using it in 2006 without twisting it a different way is not cool!
The Structure and melody is all based on a simple but powerful bassline and a simple synth hook. Lots of energy in it but a little extra details would have taken this songs a lot futher!
The mixing/originality is pretty ordinary and does surprise us a lot. But sometimes it great just to get a tone that does try to reinvent stuff. Just plain old drum n bass in you face. A pretty nice cuts come at 3:29 when the bassline drops back in with slowly – might have been even better with a low-pass filter!
Overall Make Some Noise is a decent tune that shows great promise for the future for Lil Swiss. The music I made at that point was not even close to being as good as this. So lets hope for more great drum n bass from this source in the future. The cuts on the voice samples seems to be overdone at points – sometimes simple is better. Adding details – surprises makes a song easier to listen to which is something this tune is lacking a bit. But again overall this is very good work….keep it up!

KALASHNIKOF - DalecanoaManué!

Judgereview:
Raw energy track with a hard driven 4x4 beat and some crazy synth and bass. Most of this track can pretty much be considered noise but it does have a fair share of interesting elements.

The Beat is pretty wild and not like anything I have heard before. I must say I like the parts with the traditional drum n bass beat better buts its an interesting cocktail of breaks/bass and noise that makes up the main beat of this track. Its very energetic I must admit but a little too unstructured and noisy for my taste
The Structure and melody is not whats driving this track ¡V but a twisted psycho synth does arrive about 2 mins into the song ¡V a really hard distorted bassline takes over and continues the song at ¡§full throttle¡¨ . The production of these elements are really simple ¡V almost gabba like at times but I think probably has to be to keep up at this speed
The mixing/originality is kinda oldskool in the way its build up ¡V like a typical hardcore techno track ¡V its starts out with the beat ¡V stop down for some voice samples and builds up slowly by adding more and more elements. Nothing wrong with that ¡V it works! The ending though seems a little sudden and kinda like: ¡§Ohh its 7 mins already I better stop now¡¨ ƒº
Overall This is an interesting track ¡V with a huge amount of energy! A pretty simple production driving by a clever mix of hardcore and drum n bass beats. A little too much on the noisy side but with some cool elements!

Electronvc - fm_machines_say_yes_from_the_first_date

Judgereview:
This tune falls in this contest category of wired experimental tunes! Rhythms based on machine noise and an off beat break – this is not for the conservative listener! This song features a lot of machine sounds – and starts out with something that sounds like pop corns popping – and youll hear modem sounds and printer noise and all kinds of noise in this one!

The Beats are quite unique and the machine sounds works as an integrated part of the beat. The offbeat breaks is really hard to figure out – but after a few listens you stop listening to it!
The Structure and melody is not the main part of this song – but a silent synth song can be heard in the background.
The mixing/originality is like nothing I have ever heard before – which I somehow think was the intension with this song. Its pretty cool how the songs spins down in the end!
Overall this track is probably too wired for most people but I do see some good idea in it. I only wish those idea would have been combined with something more accessible.

Der Nister - Life with no history

Judgereview:
Another unfinished tune with a length of 2 mins and 47 seconds. Based on a simple electro beat and some noise elements this tune doesn’t have too much to offer.

The Beat is a little too noisy and I am really missing a bassdrum in it. It sounds like all snare and noise.
The Structure and melody is a little hard to figure out. The main synthhook is pretty good but stands too alone – more detail and other elements to go with it would have been great!
The mixing/originality is a little limited as well. Its pretty straight and I can’t really suggest anything to improve it – so I guess its okay
Overall this is not one of my favorites in this contest. I hate to be a downer but I must say this tune didn’t quite get me. It may be that I am not the right targetgroup for this sort of thing I don’t know – but never the less I wish you the best of luck for the future!

Really experimental and atmospheric tune with a strange build up to¡Knothing ¡V the song never really starts!?! You can¡¦t help of thinking what the meaning of it all is ¡V is it a train departing ¡V or something floating in space. It makes you wonder¡Kis there more to this than what I hear at first listen..hmm I don¡¦t know?

The Beats well ¡V there isn¡¦t really any beats in this ¡V unless you consider the kraftwerk style beeps and bleeps for beats ƒº
The Structure and melody is har to call it melody ¡V it seems more like sounds to me ¡V but whos to say?
The mixing/originality is hard to judge. This is either really original and unique or there is nothing to it but random sounds. I am the positive kind so I will say this is a unique piece of music/sound.
Overall this was interesting to listen to but I can¡¦t really see this tune winning a breakbeat contest. Too bad the sound quality is so low (80 kbps ¡V 22 khz) ¡V if not it may have been more twisted and cool to listen to.

Mick - Loose Funk in here

Judgereview:
Damn groovy, what we hear there !! “loose funk in here” is not what the title promises: The funk starts right with the beat and a cheeky wah wah before the coolness of the bassline brings up the groove, and after 1:03 you know that this piece is hot !!

The Beats - the beats are straight forward kicking, not really variating much, but a pumping support for the heavy bass, together its giving the track this amazing groove, which blows your ass straight up to dance.
The Structure and melody - No second boring ! There are a lot of things which giving the song a professional attidude. The sratches, the guitar, the horns and the organ are settled in a context, which brings the lightness and funkyness into this brilliant tune.
The mixing/originality - The quality of the production is nearly perfect. The song combines the classic oldskool elements with a fresh note of the so called nuskool, that makes this unique character.
Overall - Micks entry for this years contest is a fantastic, cool, laidback but f*****g grooooovy tune. It’s a perfect fusion between oldskool flavour and nuskool funkyness.Big Beat is still alive, Kicking the crowds, perfectly done m8 !!

In Progress - Cool Down

Judgereview:
In progress is one of the most exceptional participants at this years BBP-Contest, but nevertheless it Is a great fusion between grooving acid big beat and classical songwriting. “cool down” starts with a pumping bassline and a roaring guitar riff before the beat is moving straight forward. The Voice of Mick (seems like “Faith no more” is still alive) is well set into the whole song context.

The Beats - The beat is pumping straight forward, has a clear not overloaded structure and sticks together the groove of the other elements, without much variations, but that’s not important for the tension of the song.
The Structure and melody “cool down” is a classic structured “vers, refrain” song, nearly perfectly arranged and absolutely entertaining because of all the nice synth effects. The intuitive refrain with the vocoder effect and the nice synthie melody I liked the most.
The mixing/originality The mixing quality of the song is great ! Every part is balanced perfectly and is giving the song his own atmosphere and flair, which makes it an individual style, the trademark of “in progress”.
Overall “cool down” is a brilliant example for songorientated big beats, a kind of music which is hard to find in the present, but In progress keeps it alive. BIG RESPECT !!

Wing Fly - Funkadiction

Judgereview:
Wing Fly is back in 2006 !! The Winner of the last years contest (category oldskool) keeps up the quality of groovy funky oldskool – breakbeat with this typical jazzy wing fly track.

The Beats - The beat is catchy and grooving in a midtempo drive, well set with a nice analog midi bass which is changing in different variation as we know it from his earlier productions.
The Structure and melody When u hear a track of wing fly, u can always count on that its perfectly arranged. The scratches, the guitar, organ and different effects are bedded very considered during the whole track.
The mixing/originality The production has an absolut high quality standard, the mixing, the cuts and fill ins are great. Wing Fly has his own style, representing again in this nice track.
Overall Wing Fly shows us again that he’s the man for fresh funky jazzy breakbeat, Good job, m8 !!

Weird Uncle Betty - Kick!!!

Judgereview:
The tune starts with a nice guitar intro (seems like Martin Gore plays it) and a wah wah supported rough voice describes shortly what follows: 1. the name: kick, 2. the content: fat beat. And indeed the following beat blows the shit out of every breakbeat nerd, a wild rollercoaster trip in 3:30 minutes !!

The Beats The beat is the driving element of the whole track, fast and kicking with a flavour of distortion it’s the perfect engine to kick out a breakers ass.
The Structure and melody The song has a straight lined structure, which is very important, because it profits from this oldskool form. The breaks and cuts are very well chosen and support the drive and power of the track.
The mixing/originality The Mixing Quality is quite good !! It is the dirty character of this track and its little fine settled effects bleeps and cuts which make it an original funky oldskool “kick”in tune.
Overall “kick” is a brilliant little stomping beast of a track, which you can just subdue, if you give up your body control and freak out at the dancefloor, well done, uncle betty !!

Totalloss - Excuse All The Blood

Judgereview:
Being flashbacked by sitting in a stolen car, watching the cops following in the rear-view , excuse all the blood” could be the perfect soundtrack for a dirty 70’s gangstermovie. I like the intro with this thrilling wah wah guitar and the shaking high hats before the piano and the contrabass starts.

The Beats - the whole song is filled with a lot of percussion, bongos but I miss a steady basic beat, which pushes the groove more forward, the breakbeat has just a short strong part between 0:55 and 1:50, after that the percussions take place until the end.
The Structure and melody - has this nice 70 soundtrack touch, like the choir and the horns very much, there are many buiild-ups which keeps the tension, well arranged.
The mixing/originality - the sound quality is quite good, like the whole atmosphere of the song which has this thrilling flavour.
Overall - “excuse all the blood” is a well produced 70-flavoured track in the tradition of the “propellerheads”, I just miss a little more bloody beats as the title promises. Nevertheless, a good job !!

Processor - One

Judgereview:
“one” starts with an distorted sound intro before the maintheme of the song, the synth meldoy fades in and the driving beat takes place in this very atmospheric track, thought about “future sound of london” the first time I heard it.

The Beats - the song is supported by a steady hard breakbeat, not much variations just a few breaks, but I like it, because it spreads out a lot of power with the supporting subbass.
The Structure and melody - The song is leaded by the mainhook, the synth melody and the voice part which are supported very well by the other elements. There are not much surprises, but the song lives from this dark and mystic atmosphere.
The mixing/originality - the sound quality is quite good, taking back the distortion effects a little could have make the tune a bit more elaborated.
Overall - “one” is a powerfull and atmospheric track, very well produced. It’s not really the genre of Oldskool/funky breaks, more an industrial tune, but it is a good work. Respect !!

Dj Alion - Breakbeat is my life experimental

Judgereview:
“breakbeat is my life” starts with a nice trance hook, supported by a lovely piano and a typical pumping electro breakbeat before the bass changes the atmosphere into deep areas, but only for 50 sec. then it changes back to trance elements, sad because the very well built tension of the whole track looses itself by playing to much with beatless sequences and the trance elements.

The Beats - The beats are powerful, and state of the oldskool art, I like the variations in the beats, the well set breaks and fill-ins, but as I said it should have been more constantly to keep the tension.
The Structure and melody - until 2:00 its nearly perfectly arranged, like it very much, but the last two minutes the structure gets lost by giving to much interest in the trance elements which stay alone without a supporting bassline.
The mixing/originality - The quality of mastering is excellent !! Nothing more to say about it.
Overall - “breakbeat is my life” has the potentiality to be a state of the art Trance-breaker, but the overloaded second half of beatless trance deranges the song in its structure. Nevertheless, a good job !!

Dj ErdiL vs. Balkans Belly Dance - Bugarski Cocek (Dj ErdiL Funny Club Remix)

Judgereview:
Dj Erdil enters the contest with a nice mixture of oriental beats, funny effects, and a hooky melody, spreading out a little summerfeeling with this track.

The Beats - The beat is a midtempo reggeaton styled beat, not really a breakbeat, like the whole song which is more worldbeat than oldskool/funky breaks.
The Structure and melody - Nevertheless the track is well arranged, the main melody is funny but there are not much changes in the main character of the track.
The mixing/originality - The Sound quality is quite good, some nice effects keep the happieness of the track alive, my personal favourit is the “Bääähh” sheep.
Overall - “Bugarski cocek” is a good produced funny oriental beat track, but its no oldskool/funky breakbeat at all, even a good work !!

CSM Outsider - A Bit Closer Heaven

Judgereview:
I have to be honest: 4 different loops mixed together without being very creative is not enough to make a good track out of it.

The Beats - there is a nujazz beatloop which is starting and stopping, nothing more. If a beat is monotone, like this one, you have support it with a variating bass structure or some effects, some breaks, some fill-ins
The Structure and melody - this is one of the important problems in this “track”, there is absolutely no structure, its just the different loops, put together without a plan. You have to make a plan how to create a track with elements like an intro, breaks, a main part….
The mixing/originality - sorry but there was nothing “original” I could find.
Overall - Learning by doing, this is all I can say, hope you accept my opinion, and make it better next time.

Spaz - Brilliant Blast

Judgereview:

The Beats - sweet cool. Have to admit I love these backbeats crystal method styled beats.. it holds back tension when it suppose to Great production with solid mastering in compression and stuff.
The Structure and melody - Great ambience, great synthin' and "blast"-sound.... this is what I love and pause breakdown buildup is cool. Just wondering how its possible to produce this track in fruity loops though, as it says....
The mixing/originality - great production mixing and a great combination of beats and the sneaky melodic synth fits right in there. Nice well fittet female vox in the track to.
Overall - I think my only critisism for this track is that it might be better if you modifyed the bassline abit and made a sort of a goodie surprise, but it stands out and works perfect as is. Hope its an original track and no ripoff. Must have more spaz:) Love everything about this track.

Mat Simon - Emergency Stop Run

Judgereview:
The Beats - housy beats some great stuffed beats and nice use of samples and a nice sampleselection to.
The Structure and melody - I think the tune really starts around 2:22 and maybe it would be more of a theme in there if you startet the track right there and concentrated on that part evolving it a bit more also the bassline melody is fine.
The mixing/originality - Its one of my top three songs in this catagory and I think if the whole tune was a bit less confusing it would have made a great winner. The mixing is good and skilled.
Overall - I love the feel it gives around 2:22 and beyond. I would focus more on that part right there with the dirty scratchin if I was to modify something, maybe bould the tune up around it. I love the beats and the bass all the sounds exept some of the talking stuff every sample and synth sounds great. A must listen.

Jason Donnelly (aka Dj Puzzle) - Trapped & Strapped

Judgereview:

The Beats - This is an awesome electroclasher.. This contest makes me feel like I wanna pick two winners. Great beats and I like it. Shows great production and skills.
The Structure and melody - I love the minimalistic 80ties electro clash sound and great structure all throughout the whole track and it sounds fresh and it goes straight into my mp3player. Easily reckockniseble, Nice length and ending to.
The mixing/originality - I can't get enough of this track its a great one abit poppy, but its a great track and I love you put the inspirational bands on there like ladytron. Lives up to every expectation you might have.
Overall - Jason Donnelly's track is surely one of my top 3 songs in this contest, with spaz and mat simon but I cant choose all three of them as winners but I would love to listen to all of Jason Donnelys tracks if theres more. I Hope so.

Atomique - Waspinator

Judgereview:

The Beats - I love these beats they are massive and cool and has a great tech-feel to them.
The Structure and melody - A great wicked tune and production I love the effects in there. Maybe just a kinda third element in there would have made this one a firm winner in this contest. A synthmelody to go with the atmospheric spooky sound that runs through the whole track or just anything more I guess.
The mixing/originality - Its an awesome production. I Like it. Spooky and thrilling and very original actually. Even though simple is good its a little to simple I think.
Overall Theres an original sound to this track that I love and a little beatchange or basslinechange change or something"third element" would have made this track even better. If I could modify something I think I would make a surreal synth in it to go with coool ambience. Wicked waspinator.

Ravager One - Can't Stand It

Judgereview:
The Beats Are nice and strong punchy and clean, love when it breaks down about 3 minutes into the song:D
A well produced track The Structure and melody is dark technoish with a nice fitting little speech from the mr smith that hates this place from the matrix. Goood synth that variates throughout the tune
The mixing/originality of this tune is a little repitional and i miss some change in the bassline that does the unexpected or just a little diverserty.I t would easily fit into a great night club session mix with dark nuskool/dnbish theme.
Overall its a nice dark tune and though I miss some varity in the melody (or more vocalhooks) I think the sounds are great. Anyways one of the strongest tunes in this catagory for sure. Lovely and wellproduced.

moqito - we are born 4 rock n roll

Judgereview:

The Beats - I like these crazy beats. Dry in your face right on. Love that breakdown around 3:08 into the track.
The Structure and melody - I want the voices to be louder and maybe a little less confusion with a little bit less sounds in there. Some of the sounds are awesome but some are a little cheesy.
The mixing/originality - A crazy mixture I like the beats and most of the sounds. Keep it a little more simple. Saying that it makes it more original with all that psyko craziness.
Overall - If I could keep the psyko craziness and have it a little more simple and cleaner voices and effects at the same time It would make much more of a tune than it is. But its "in the box" sound is great:)

DJ Poppin J - Get Your Guns

Judgereview:
The Beats - I want the beat to build up and stuff and maybe give a little more drumroll third part intensety stop and go with some crazy stuff. But the downpart is, that it doesnt. Good drumsound and it works anyways and shows it dosnt have to be complex to work.
The Structure and melody - Around 1:47 where it kinda kicks off, I want the tune to start instead. Great sound and theme. But its to much to wait 2 minutes before it gets really interesting. Nice bass maybe little to "loud" in comparison to the beats that are kind of "not loud"
The mixing/originality - All in all a nice little tune and love the synth noisy stuff. Great sounds.
Overall - I had to listen to it a couple of times to find out what worked in this track for me. The only thing wrong I can put my finger on is those beats. Concentrating more on some beat more insistant and maybe start it of around 1:47 into the track, then you have a much more intense song. Great song though.

the reverend - this beat

Judgereview:

The Beats - Great strong beats and drumbuildups! Nice effects and all that jazz:) I like the distortion on them in about 5 minutes after kickoff. Nice variation the strong side of this tune
The Structure and melody A pretty cool production and great work with that vocal "been hearing this beat, all day" stuff. But it dosnt really have an ending as a single track. The beginning is awesome but gets a little boring though listening to the synth that could do with a little variation to it!
The mixing/originality It could work on a dancefloor and the great thing is that even though it is a little boring it has great effects and beats and they know exactly what they are doing. Nice work!
Overall It dosnt stand out to much but would do fine kicking the crowd on the dancefloor. Great breaking and vocal. And nice use of the stereofield. Maybe a little more of like putting the vocals in one speaker switcing over fast and some hihats a little to the left when you want more attention to the beat - THIS BEAT:D

Flek C - Tripping on Stones

Judgereview:

The Beats - Nice and steady beat thats banging good but the focus here has been on the melody.
The Structure and melody - A sweet cool melodic synthy tune kinda trancy, I like the when the piano(or thing) kicks in around 1:37 It really makes you listen and thrill, could be a little more of that though.
The mixing/originality - Good production that tells a story of tripping on stones I guess. Theres a little lack of originality but I like the melody.
Overall The overall feel of this track is a great melodic piece of music and thats all this piece has to offer. It shows great potentiel but It dosnt really stand out alot and makes me think of eurodance to much. Its so relieving though that this tune dosnt have the typical 4/4 beat. But some breaking, yeear.

adeser - Renegated guitars

Judgereview:

The Beats - The Beats are nice and tight running in this one with a little variation.
The Structure and melody - I really like the guitars though the downside is that they sound like computerones. Not real ones. The structure indicates its a little to long and the tune dosnt change alot though it dosnt have to be a bad thing.
The mixing/originality - Its not to much of an original that stands out but the mixing and all is allright. Greatly tight produced.
Overall - The Beats are tight and cool. Overall a nice Nuskool track that would'nt stand out in such a session. But at the same thats exactly the downside. Fine speciment.

DJ EcsTasY - Funky Music

Judgereview:

The Beats - Nice eletctro cool beats. with claps and everything. Makes me think of great 80ies drum machinery wich isnt a bad thing at all.
The Structure and melody - Nice clear and simple. Its funny how the melodic parts in these songs of this catagory seems to be based around the same melody. Weird. the production sounds a little distortet, like its been to much up in the red field(or maybe my speakers are broken).
The mixing/originality - Quite simple track that works! With an electrovoice that says "funky music". I would have preferred more soundeffects. I miss some change in the melody to and the annoying leadsynh sound is a little worn out to me bc its used in dancemusic all over the world.
Overall The overall feel of this track is good and simple. I dont like the trancy leadsynth but the drumsounds are nice clean electro. I love the creamy acidbass in the biginning! More of that please:)

monotonic - thats right

Judgereview:
The Beats Are distortet nice and hard and fits with the the hook
The Structure and melody is darkly industrial with synth and great vocals. Its a bit too long though and could do with some place in it where it just goes crazy.
The Thats Right Tune takes you to an the ambience of dark machinery. The mixing/originality of this track is not of the most complex but the bassahh sound is greatly designed and if it only would go up a notch and not repeat itself throughout the whole song.
Overall its an ambient track that takes you away with 80ties echo and distorion on sounds, a bit boring today. it would go well on the soundtrack to an early scince fiction movie. I like the vocals and sciencefiction feel and the BassAhh sound on the snare alot. More of that please:)

S Dot Fox - Meth

Well this is the most well-balanced tune in this contest. It has the most amazing arrangement and the best originality, the best best produciton and the highest individuality of all tunes this year. Here is really everything outstanding, the beats, the soundquality and the producitonway of course. One of the best tunes i have ever heard. It's a tune flavoured with oriental and asian sounds paired with an electronic way of life, this all makes the tune very special and unique.

The Beats - This beat is very special. A great sounding big beat with a varied beat-construction. Great samplechoice and a very professional formation. This beat compositon with all it's little bridges and sideways is terrific. Great work.

The Structure and Melody The Structure is an a-class product, more than well arranged and produced. It is changing every minute and you can't say what's coming next. That's really great. The Melody is like a butterfly. It's starts with an inconsiderable intro and gets after the short pupation into a really imposing, great coloured and wonderfull song. The whole song has this dull ambience in it. It souds dark-melancholic in the briges but very clear and hopefull in the mainparts, that's awesome. That's a thing i don't get enough of. The asian sound give the track a very happy atmosphere. The oriental sound give the track an exotic touch and the dire and electronic sound melts everything together into a hybrid production like i have never heard before. It's a combination of world-musics best parts.

The Mixing/Originality - Everything is here very well balanced. The whole track is an original. Awesome changeovers, perfect soundquality and an exceeding sample/sound/synth/effect-c
